About the Work: The series of drawings is created with the intent to share my culture and our identity. The drawings will have chicano iconography that has become a staple in our community , chicano calligraphy and the “Payasa”
The “Payasa” or “Payaso” has many meanings; one being the good times and bad times of growing up (smile now, cry later). Going through life as children of immigrants was not easy, but our community always helped out. We all have stories that we'd love to share and to keep memories alive I put them in my art.
The lettering in the background is sometimes a thought, a feeling, or just a quote. It holds in place the mood I was in at that moment. Machismo is still a big part of the culture, so instead of intentionally sharing my feelings or thoughts I hide them in the background.
